A murder mystery game at home does not need costumes, a host or a script. The kind we make is a printed cold case: a box of real documents on paper, and one question to answer. Who did it?

What you need

  • One printed case file (the box has everything)
  • A table with room to spread out about 55 pages
  • One to six players
  • Two to three hours
  • A phone, only to check your final answer

Set up the table

Clear a big table and put a lamp on it. Spread the documents out so everyone can see them. Cases like The Raizada File arrive in sealed envelopes, so keep them closed until the case tells you to open them.

Read together, not alone

Split up the reading if you like, but say what you find out loud. The solve usually comes from two people noticing that two documents do not agree with each other.

Keep one notepad

Write down names, dates and anything that does not add up. A single shared notepad stops the same question being asked three times.

Make your guess, then check it

When the table agrees on who did it and why, write the answer down and check it on the online Case Desk. You type it in and the desk tells you whether you are right.

How long does it take?

Plan for two to three hours. You can stop halfway and carry on the next evening, because everything stays on paper.

Questions people ask

Do I need to act or wear costumes?
No. This is an investigation game. You read documents and work out the answer. There are no roles to play.
How many people can play?
One to six. It works well with two to four.
Do I need to print anything?
No. Everything arrives printed and sealed in the box.
Can I play on my phone?
The case itself is on paper. Your phone is only for checking your answer on the Case Desk.
